Briarwood have achieved a Gold Award for the Arts Mark!
At Briarwood Special School we place a crucial importance on the arts, with a high level of our core and foundation subjects being taught through arts based activities. We have adopted a creative, multi-sensory approach to learning and have many cross-curricular links with our core subjects and the arts. Due to the very complex medical and sensory needs of our pupils at Briarwood, we ensure that our curriculum is both inclusive and accessible across all areas of the curriculum. Our curriculum design also demonstrates a strong commitment to high quality arts and culture provision through the implementation of specialist intervention teachers and external agencies.
Arts Mark is a scheme which aims to develop arts and culture based activity across the school in order to encompass an enriched and inclusive curriculum where the arts are embedded into a broader school strategy. There are 7 key principles within Arts Mark which include:
- Striving for excellence and innovation
- Being authentic
- Being exiting, inspiring and engaging
- Ensuring a positive and inclusive experience
- Actively involving young people
- Enabling personal progression
- Developing belonging and ownership
With the help of Arts Mark alongside a support network of cultural organisations and providers, we aspire to improve the quality of our creative and life skills based curriculum, develop high quality and innovative schemes of work and provide more opportunities to enthuse and engage pupils through authentic, inclusive opportunities which enable personal progression.
