Chair of Governors

My name is Deborah Smith.  I have been a Governor for many years at Briarwood, and became Chair in May 2017. I believe the role of governors is to ensure school leaders deliver high quality learning. We are a group of 12 governors, including a chair and vice chair, representatives from the school, staff and families, past and present. Our vice chair, Nina Gerrard, with whom I work very closely, taught at the school for a number of years and has a good understanding of the needs of Briarwood pupils and their families.

The governors meet once a term and everyone is welcome to join us. We discuss various issues about the school, including the School Improvement and Development Plans. The Headteacher, with whom we have a very positive relationship, attends the full governors meeting and we value his Headteacher report.

We also hold separate Finance, Personnel, Wellbeing and Teaching and Learning meetings. All governors participate on various committees. The governors support the schools vision and aims. We offer both challenge and practical support in each of the above areas for senior leaders and staff.

The chair and Headteacher meet regularly to discuss issues such as Health and Safety and the safeguarding of pupils. Governors also come to school to support special events such as the Harvest Festival and Christmas Performance, and in the summer we support the school Music Festival.

All governors give up their time freely as they have volunteered for the role. They enjoy the role they have to play in the life of this wonderful school and are proud to be part of its exciting future.
